Hermannsburg School

This distinctive school of naturalist realist watercolour art started in 1932, when Rex Battarbee and John Gardner first visited the Hermannsburg Mission. In 1936, Battarbee gave the young Albert Namatjira materials and lessons in watercolour painting. Namatjira's work was eagerly taken up by the Western art world.

By the late 1940s, a number of other Hermannsburg men were painting in what has become known as the style of the Hermannsburg School.
